Soviet Tanks in the Tiergarten

Berlin 1945

This image from the set described in this post shows Soviet tanks going down Strasse Des 17 Juni as part of the Victory Parade in 1945.

What is interesting about this image and the previous one is that the rivalry between East and West is already beginning to show. Both sides are bringing out their best kit to show who has the biggest and best weapons. In this case the tanks are Josef Stalin JS-3 tanks. Weighing nearly 50 tons and armed with a 122mm gun they were the most powerful battle tank in the Soviet Arsenal at that time.

Within a few short years the former Allies would no longer entertain joint parades and the fear would be that the next time Soviet tanks streamed through the Tiergarten it would be under less friendly terms.
